I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy this game. A friend and I played the Neverwinter Nights together and really enjoyed it.
We wanted to continue on with the same characters; but the first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, makes you start with a new character. So, we skipped Shadows and went straight to Hordes. First, let me say that skipping Shadows doesn’t seem to have mattered. You never feel lost in the storyline. The two games must share very little plot. Second, I was very pleased to notice a significant gain in the quality of the graphics and gameplay.
Not that Neverwinter was a slouch. The game is a little old now, so my relatively new 1. We’ve encountered few problems, but the most annoying is exclusive to multiplayer. At certain times in the game, a 3D graphics movie will run with some dialog.
However, it will only play for the lead character. If the other player is lucky, he can still run around and act. A few of times, he is unlucky and has to stare at a black screen through the movie and the fight that ensues. This never happened in Neverwinter. I find the replay value is good, especially since I feel taht the puzzles are pretty easy even the first time but live for the tough fights.
I’ve played it through twice with different characters and have enjoyed exploring with different character attributes. Before I play it again, I will probably buy Shadows and start a new character off there. I like The Shadows of Undrentide better than this expansion but this one still has a lot to offer. You go the through about 4 different levels of Underdark fighting hoardes of new enemys. You can level up to level 40 which is great undrentide is This is a great expansion pack.
So if you meet those requirements and own NWNs buy this expansion. Also purchase The Shadows of Undrentide as well. Hordes of the Underdark takes you on a long beautifull journey; it is the Bioware game you always wanted, while The Shadows of Undrentide could be for some somehow a disappointment, with this game you do not take that risk.
In quality, it’s up there with classics like the Baldur’s Gate and Diablo games. Nice Prestige Classes and the ability to advance to “Epic” levels, nice in game items. There is a good Mac community on the Bioware site, a lot of modules made by players and Bioware, guarantees you tons of hours of playing. A must have in my opinion. Remember this is an expansion. This is the Bioware game we all were waiting for.
In quality, it’s up there with their classics like the Baldur’s Gate games. The added general features are also much worth the admission: several interesting Prestige Classes and the ability to advance to “Epic” levels above level 20, as well as more detailed models and builder tools. As a Mac user, you don’t get to directly experience the added toolset flexibility, but the many modules and online games that use it will make it worthwhile.

Although they’re rather static in their animation and still have a tendency to get stuck behind things, the henchmen here are more chatty and keep on giving you their opinions on what’s happening, like it or not. Bioware has been on fire over the last couple of years. Just don’t get me started on the gorgeous-looking Jade Empire , because I’m still sulking and shuffling my feet about the fact that it’s only coming out on the Xbox. It contains a hour-plus single-player campaign, six new prestige classes dragon disciple, dwarven defender, pale master, champion of Torm, weapon master and shifter , along with the ability to customise characters and weapons.
The main difference between this expansion and NWN: Shadows Of Undrentide is that you start as a level 15 character and can progress to the new level cap of 40, gaining a new ‘Epic’ status along the way. This means you get access to many of the most impressive-looking spells and skills right at the start, so you need a hefty machine to render the impressive fireworks displays that you’ll be bombarded with as you cast your devastating incantations.
Getting all the good stuff straight away certainly makes the game feel more exciting, especially as you can adequately challenge the more interesting enemies and even have a hope in hell of taking down a dragon. The campaign itself has a bit more pace than the last expansion too – boasting some attractive cut scenes – and involves you travelling deep into Undermountain to battle some pesky Drow elves who are causing trouble up top.
This time you can take two henchmen with you, which gives the whole affair more of a party feel – but it’s still not a patch on the party dynamics in Baldur’s Gate II. Although they’re rather static in their animation and still have a tendency to get stuck behind things, the henchmen here are more chatty and keep on giving you their opinions on what’s happening, like it or not.
The option of having two henchmen just about makes up for the single-player campaign not being supported in multiplayer, likely to be a disappointment for some. However, the focus on the single-player experience, along with Bioware’s top-notch level design has created an expansion pack with great detail and atmosphere that’s arguably even more immediately immersive than the original game.
